Value Chain Stage: Natural Fibers

Natural fibers include cellulosic and protein-based fibers. Natural cellulosic fibers can be extracted from the stems or leaves of many plants. Cotton is the most widely used natural, cellulosic fiber. Vegetable fibers also fall into this category (flax, jute, ramie, coconut, sisal, etc).  Protein fibers come from the hair of animals (i.e., wool), as well as the silk of the silkworm.
